This online exhibition celebrates Archives Awareness Campaign 2004, which is a national campaign to unlock the potential of archives and encourage existing, new and different users to experience all that archives have to offer. This year’s campaign theme is ‘Routes to Roots’, and you will see other exhibitions and events in Archives and Libraries throughout the UK during this period. A number of these also relate to the Caribbean region and details of these can be found on the Archives Awareness Campaign website http://www.archiveawareness.com

The Institute of Commonwealth Studies holds a wide range of archive collections, with particular strengths in the Caribbean and Southern Africa.

This online exhibition showcases some of the materials within our collection relating to the Caribbean. The exhibition examines a number of themes in Caribbean history in a broadly chronological sequence, including slavery and abolition, agriculture and trade, the experience of soldiers from the Caribbean in World War One, independence and the development of trade unions and political parties. The exhibition highlights some of our larger collections relating to the Caribbean, and we have attempted to select images that are both visually exciting as well as being informative on the themes discussed.

For information on how to use this exhibition, and a list of themes covered, see the Exhibition Overview section.
