ELCAS funding for current and former members of the Armed Forces

Former and current members of the Armed Forces who are part of the Enhanced Learning Credits scheme can use their ELC-only funding towards the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights.

Those using the scheme would be required to pay 20% of the tuition fee and can claim up to £2000.00 from the Ministry of Defence to offset the rest.

Routledge/Round Table Studentship

Routledge, publisher of The Round Table journal celebrated its centenary in 2010 and in celebration of the publisher's continuing association with The Round Table, the Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs, and the journal's connection with the Institute, began an annual award to sponsor one MA Understanding and Securing Human Rights student.

The award is open to students, from Commonwealth countries outside the United Kingdom , who have been accepted by the Institute for the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights. The closure date for applicants for the Routledge/Round Table Studentship this year is 6th July 2012 and the award is worth £8,500.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS FUNDING IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO OVERSEAS RATE PAYING STUDENTS.

Eligible candidates should indicate to Simon Lund-Lack, Graduate Student Officer at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies that they wish to be considered. Applicants will not need to provide any additional material. The successful student will be selected on the basis of an academic and biographical CV and his or her personal statement, which states why he or she wishes to follow this course at the Institute.  Those wishing to apply should contact their UK High Commission as soon as possible to establish a) what financial resource they will need to demonstrate to obtain a UK visa as a postgraduate student and b) what procedures they must fulfil to obtain a UK visa.

ICwS Partial Scholarship

The Institute offers a limited number of partial scholarships (up to £250 for part-time Home/EU students, up to £500 for full-time Home/EU students, up to £750 for part-time Overseas students, up to £1,500 for full-time Overseas students) to students registered at the ICwS towards the cost of tuition fees. Applications for these should be sent to the Graduate Student Officer (Simon Lund-Lack) by Friday 8th July 2011.

Commonwealth Scholarships

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the United Kingdom (CSC) is responsible for managing Britain’s contribution to the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP). The CSC supports around 700 awards annually. Awards are funded by the Department for International Development (for developing Commonwealth countries), and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Scottish Government (for developed Commonwealth countries), in conjunction with UK universities.

Scholarships are available for Commonwealth citizens to undertake PhD and Master's study in the UK. For full details, please visit their website.

Schools Competition Act Settlement Trust

SCAST offers Postgraduate Bursaries (£2,500) and Postgraduate Research Scholarship Postgraduate Bursaries (£15,000 per annum for up to three years) for students.

These are only available from former pupils of contributing UK secondary schools. A list of which can be found through the ‘eligibility’ section of the website.

 

Sir Richard Stapley Educational Trust

The Trust funds students pursuing degrees in medicine, dentistry and veterinary studies and postgraduate degree students from all fields of study. Applications are welcome from students beginning their first year of study, as well as from those already embarked on their degree course.

In order to be eligible to apply for a grant, you must be:

a) over the age of 24 on 01 October of the proposed year of study

b) either accepted on, or applying for a place on a degree course in medicine, dentistry or veterinary studies, or accepted on, or applying for a full- or part-time place on a Masters or Doctoral degree programme in any discipline, at a UK university

c) already resident in the UK at the time of application, and resident in the UK during the course of study.

Awards are competitive and made on the basis of academic merit and financial need.  All grants are awarded for a full year of academic study and for one year only. Grants are normally from £300 to £1000 in value. They are intended to cover the shortfall incurred by educational and subsistence expenses.
