Professor Philip Murphy features across international press as the Queen misses CHOGM 2013

Wednesday 8 May 2013

Institute of Commonwealth Studies Director, Professor Phillip Murphy, was consulted by national press both in the UK and further afield following the news that Queen Elizabeth II is set to miss the forthcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government meeting in Sri Lanka. Offering comment for the BBC and CTV as well as in a number of newspapers in the US, Professor Murphy argued that, whilst it is entirely possible that the Queen’s long haul travel schedule required revision due to her advanced years, the controversial choice of venue may have had some role to play in the decision taken by the palace. Professor Murphy is set to launch his forthcoming book ‘Monarchy and the End of Empire’ later this year and recently authored a piece in ICwS’s new ‘Commonwealth Opinion’ blog on the issue of Sri Lanka’s hosting of CHOGM, which can be found here.
