On the occasion of the third anniversary of the withdrawal of the international community from Afghanistan and the return of the Taliban to de-facto power, this panel will discuss the current challenges facing women and girls in Afghanistan. Women’s rights and freedoms have been severely curtailed by the Taliban, and reversed progress made towards gender equality. This high-level panel welcomes leading voices of Afghan women, including journalist Zahra Joya, to reflect on the present circumstances and opportunities for supporting women and girls in Afghanistan. The panel also welcomes the former UK Ambassador to Afghanistan, Sir Laurie Bristow, who oversaw the UK’s withdrawal in 2021, and the current UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Afghanistan, Richard Bennett, to comment on the role of the international community in supporting women and girls facing gender oppression. British-American journalist Amie Ferris-Rotman, global news editor at News Lines Magazine, will be moderating the event.
