Fellowships in Human Rights
The Human Rights Consortium’s Visiting Fellowships in Human Rights enable academics and researchers to spend a period of time – ranging between one to four months – carrying out research within the Consortium. We offer non-stipendiary Visiting Fellowships which are considered on a rolling basis. Longer visits may, in exceptional circumstances, be approved; please contact the Human Rights Consortium if you would wish your Fellowship period to extend beyond four months.
Prospective applicants should be aware that the Human Rights Consortium will only accept applicants to the scheme who can show a clear case for why they should be based specifically at the Human Rights Consortium (including the Refugee Law Initiative). Applicants are expected to make a case for how their time at the Consortium will contribute to our research environment as well as benefit their own research. Please note that if you wish to use the Senate House Libraries, it is possible to obtain admission to the Libraries as a researcher based at a UK or overseas institution with being a Visiting Fellow. Although neither the Human Rights Consortium nor the School of Advanced Study is able to make living arrangements or organize accommodation for our Visiting Fellows, useful information on housing in London may be found below.
Guidance for applicants
- Visiting Fellows may commence their visiting research period at any point during the academic year, subject to agreement between the fellow and the Human Rights Consortium.
- This scheme is open to researchers of post-doctoral status (or equivalent); fellows are usually junior or senior researchers, although applications from human rights practitioners with relevant experience will be considered. Visiting Fellowships are not normally open to PhD students.
- Visiting Fellows are expected to contribute to the life of the School and are encouraged to do so by attending, convening and chairing seminars, conferences and workshops, and contributing to publications.
- Visiting Fellows are asked to write a brief report following their fellowship, outlining the work they have undertaken during the course of the fellowship.
- Your application must include: the application form (below) and any attachments; a short CV (maximum two pages); and two academic or professional references.
- Referees should address: your suitability as a Visiting Fellow in Human Rights, in the light of your research interests and experience; the benefits for you resulting from undertaking a Visiting Fellowship; and the benefits to the Human Rights Consortium.

- a completed application form
- an up to date CV
- two references
- a short statement of the research to be undertaken during the period of the proposed Fellowship and/or publications expected to result from it.
