Housed within the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, the Human Rights Consortium (HRC) was established in 2009 to facilitate and promote inter-disciplinary research in human rights globally, not exclusively within the Commonwealth.
The HRC brings together multidisciplinary expertise to provide a national and international collaborative centre for the support, promotion and dissemination of academic and policy work in human rights. We deliver the cutting-edge teaching and practice-based training currently offered within our MA in Human Rights programme (offered by distance learning) and the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights campus programme.
As part of the School of Advanced Study, the Human Rights Consortium contributes to the training of research students working on human rights.
It organises and supports academic, policy and practice-orientated activities on human rights, principally under three key themes:
Understanding and Securing Human Rights
Environmental Justice
Minority and Indigenous Peoples' Rights
The research projects bring together interdisciplinary expertise from the field to provide a national and international collaborative centre for the support, promotion and dissemination of academic and policy work in human rights. Students benefit from teaching from academics who continually update teaching materials to reflect their current research. The HRC also aims to raise funds in support of human rights research and research support.
