Date

On November 6, 2023, the Ukrainian Red Cross organised an event titled 'Environment at Gunpoint: Consequences of Armed Conflict for the Environment and International Humanitarian Law' in Lviv, Ukraine, in collaboration with the Danish Red Cross, British Red Cross, Swedish Red Cross, and IFRC.

The discussions centered on the severe environmental repercussions of armed conflicts, and mechanisms for environmental protection and compensation  for violations of international law and national legislation particularly within the context of Ukraine's full-scale invasion by the Russian Federation.

As an invited speaker Associate Fellow at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies Maud Sarliève focused on the critical topic of State responsibility for environmental damage during armed conflicts, introducing key aspects of the International Legal Framework, from established rules and principles of international environmental law and international humanitarian law to emerging principles and concepts, thus highlighting the complexities of this evolving area of international law.
