St Andrews Debate: The Commonwealth is a Force for Good

On 20 February, the Director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies, Professor Kingsley Abbott, was delighted to join the St Andrews Union Debating Society to argue in favour of the motion ‘This House believes that the Commonwealth is a force for good'.

“The St Andrews Union Debating Society is the oldest - and some might say finest - of its kind, founded in 1794.”

The speakers were:

Proposition:

  • Professor Kingsley Abbott. Director of the Institute of Commonwealth Studies
  • Q Manivannan, a Graduate Teaching Assistant in International Relations at the University of St Andrews

Opposition:

  • Professor Thomas Scotto, Head of the Department and Professor of Government and Politics at the University of Strathclyde.
  • Arielle Friedlander, third year Masters of Theology student and active member of the Union Debating society and CCJ student representative.
