A new book by ICwS Senior Research Fellow Dr Mark Simpson has just been published. Entitled Donors, Democracy and Development in Africa: Western Aid and Political Repression the book uses a multi-disciplinary approach to examine the role of Western development assistance in supporting the authoritarian African regimes in Uganda, Ethiopia and Rwanda. In the midst of this ongoing global democratic regression, the book is an important contribution to a critical debate. View the flyer here.
Catherine Philp, World Affairs Editor of The Times had this to say about the publication:
“An essential examination of how Western development aid has helped entrench and prop up repressive regimes in Africa and contributed to democratic backsliding. Simpson deftly lays out how authoritarian regimes nourished by Western aid are responsible not only for political repression at home but also spiralling violence against neighbours. The book contains important lessons for academic, professional, and lay audiences alike.”
