Profile

Dr Kiran Hassan is a Research Associate Fellow and the coordinator of the Media Freedom Initiative at the Institute of Commonwealth Studies University of London. She holds a Master's degree in English Literature from Pakistan, an MSc in Social Anthropology from the LSE, University of London; and PhD in Political Communication from School of Advanced Studies, University of London. She has taught International Relations at SOAS University of London, and Global Communication at NYU. Before this, she has been the South Asian expert at the International Institute for Strategic Studies in London. She has also contributed to various media and anthropological research projects with a focus on social media audience consumption patterns with the BBC World Service in London. She has been observing Pakistani print - electronic and social media as a follow-up on her PhD on Political Communication in Post 9/11 Pakistan. Her current area of research is focusing on emerging media trends with regards to the rise of China within the Commonwealth countries. She is also observing human rights media issues around climate change, religious minorities and social media in elections within the Commonwealth. She continues to publish and present her academic research and speak at international policy platforms.
